@tess The concern is that with the current system good posts get promoted and the author gets credit. This is the way you build engagement. If the quote booster is the post that goes viral then the original author doesn't really get credited for their work. Popular accounts would have the potential to drown out smaller accounts, whereas now popular accounts promote good posts by smaller accounts. This could really impact the way Mastodon works.
@tess One aspect of quote boosting, that should get attention is how boosts are tallied. This may seem like a minor point, but when you boost a post the post's original author gets the boost, and people can see how popular the post is based on the number of people who boost it. With quote boosts, who gets the boost credit? The original author or the booster, who may just type "read this...".

Have been on Mastodon for almost nine months now, and I'm still missing the ability to quote-boost. There are so many times I want to add some context to a post before boosting it to my followers. Useful facility.
What are the qualitative & quantitative differences between #QuoteBoosting-as-dunk & blog posting-as-dunk?
E.g. this is a pretty solid dunk on Balaji Srinivasan & I feel better for reading it. Was it ethically bad for @davekarpf to do this? How about if Srinivasan had created a social media thread & Dave #QuoteBoost-ed that instead of sharing Srinivasan's video?

We are against #quoteBoosting or #quoteTooting, or whatever. Fediverse grew in popularity because it was different. It was not a #timeSink either.
Not feeling the pressure to add to the conversation when sharing was a breath of fresh air for us, moving to fedi.

personally I'd love quote boosting to become a thing on Mastodon, it'd make meta-discussion about topics way easier. Also makes it easier to share your thoughts and why you think something when boosting a toot.
I didn’t mind its absence at first, but now I’m starting to think quote-boosting might improve the Mastodon experience. Without that added context, and with boosting being so important, my timeline here often feels like a random succession of boosts. Knowing why someone I followed wanted to boost a particular post would add to my sense of interaction with them, and would lead to discussion. What do you think?
