TL;DR: Clawdbot is a tech nerd hobbyist project. It's not simple to install, not secure and not cheap. Don't feed it your data.
My full analysis below:
🤖 Clawdbot is very much still a tech nerd hobbyist project only being played with by software engineers
🤖 It's based on Anthropic's Claude LLM. You use Telegram chat messenger to talk to it and ask it to schedule tasks.
🤖 To run it, you need to install the bot on either a virtual private server (i.e. rent a bit of space in the cloud) or dig out an old laptop, raspberry pi or mac mini to stick it on.
🤖 Once running, you have to collect all the authentication tokens for all your services (Gmail, Google Calendar, Discord, WhatsApp, Skyscanner, Opentable etc) into an online secrets manager, and hook that up to Clawdbot.
🤖 Then you need to download "skills" (bits of code) from the skills library to your bot manually, or ask it to do it from the Telegram chat messenger. This is how the bot was able to ring a restaurant and make a reservation by itself.
🤖 Pros: In theory the sky's the limit, you could get Clawdbot to summarise your emails, rearrange the files on your computer by type, track flight prices on Skyscanner and send you a scheduled alert when a bargain flight to Japan appears, or send you reminder messages..
🤖Cons: but there are so many cons!
🤖 Con 1: Because this bot is based on Claude, it still hallucinates answers sometimes. So adding a skill can break the whole bot's code and then you have to start again from scratch! 😅 (I anticipate this would take me a week of evenings to get set up, and a lot of crying in frustration - it even breaks for the developers making YouTube tutorials about it haha)
🤖 Con 2: Honestly, many of the tasks Clawdbot can do, you can do yourself or just by asking Anthropic's Claude
🤖 Con 3: It's not cheap! You need to pay $5 for the VPS subscription, $5 for the secrets manager, $20 for Claude Pro subscription, plus the more tasks you ask Clawdbot to do, the more tokens you need to pay Anthropic for. Some developers said on X they've racked up $300 playing with this bot.
🤖 Con 4: Lastly and most importantly, Clawdbot is not secure! The bot downloads random Skills, either ones you pick or ones it thinks will help, and *anyone* can stick malware in the open source skills library and use the malware to steal your confidential data. One developer found more than 900 instances of Clawdbot online that are not secure.
🤖 A safer option would be to go play with Lenovo and Motorola's Qira ambient AI assistant. That offers security, but it just does the email summarising, takes notes during video calls, summarises the latest drama in your Whatsapp chats.
