Tonight's film is Above Suspicion a 1943 American spy film directed by Richard Thorpe and starring Joan Crawford and Fred MacMurray. The screenplay was adapted from the 1941 novel Above Suspicion by Scots-American writer Helen MacInnes, which is loosely based on the experiences of MacInnes and her husband Gilbert Highet. -Wikipedia

I read the book earlier this year.

I loved this spy thriller set just before World War 2 and written in the early years of that war. Oddly enough, Hitler and even the Sieg Heil greeting are never referred to by name, just alluded to, although there is a joking reference to El Duce near the end. It sometimes suggested that British people did not know the true nature of the Nazi regime in the early years of the war but this Scottish writer certainly depicts it accurately and the novel was tremendously popular too. The events were loosely adapted from the experiences of MacInnes and her husband, Gilbert Highet. I look forward to watching the film adaptation starring Fred McMurray and Joan Crawford, and suspect the plot of the book is simplified.

Life imitates art and art imitates itself. Above Suspicion is a Double Indemnity variation in which Christopher Reeve plays a cop who ends up in a wheelchair after a bust goes wrong; “Ironically, it was filmed a year before the tragic accident that would make him a quadriplegic” (according to an All Movie.com writer whose definition of irony comes from the Alanis Morissette Dictionary).
