I personally dislike over-neat, over-curated gardens. I want to see the new and the decaying, the architecture of death and the exuberance of generation. It is good for wildlife and soil health too!

See this seeding allium long after it flowered (nearly 2 months ago), with the flowering Californa poppy and other vigour on the background.

If you live in a cold, northern-prairie climate, and want to start plants early in doors, and then you start to go a bit overboard...

Tiny green things pushing out of the still cold soil. Last week this time the garden was under 3 inches of snow - now I can see sedum, yarrow and harebells.

For any #YEG (or similar northern prairie folks) who are interested in starting a #garden, or switching to starting your own seeds instead of buying transplants, this is my planting schedule. Yes, start indoors now!

This if for Edmonton in the city. Frost hardy plants go out late April / early May (mid-April for planters that can be covered in case of temps below -2°C). Frost-sensitive plants go out last week of May, first week of June. Adjust as required.

I get a few seed/plant catalogues, but the highlight is always the T&T Seeds Catalogue every winter. Maybe because it is the first seed catalogue I ever got!

And it arrived today
