It’s planning time, for coming seasons. It’s time to take what we learned from what did and didn’t work last year and apply it. Try new things. Learn how to read the signs of weather and apply them, since the growing season charts we are usually given are more and more irrelevant.
I’m annoyed by several seed companies with whom I’ve done brisk business over the year who no longer send print catalogues. I don’t want to hear any b.s. about it being an environmental decision. We know it’s not. It’s economic, cheaper for them.
I want a catalogue I can hold in my hands and carry around and look through wherever I am. If companies aren’t going to provide it, I will move my business elsewhere.
I am especially disappointed in Botanical Interests, a company I’ve used for years. I may still buy a few seeds, seeds I’ve used before from them (like cat grass). But I will cut back my purchases considerably this year, with an eye to moving all my business elsewhere.
Johnny’s will get more of my business this year. And local businesses, where I can flip through the packets in person.
A couple of other new-to-me seed companies caught my eye on social media, but if they don’t have print catalogues, I’m not putting my money there. I’m especially not putting my money there if a QR code is involved. I do not use QR codes.
Planning is one of my favorite parts of the season, but I don’t want to do it online or on my phone. I get to choose where to spend my money, especially since I’m on a budget. I will not put my money with companies who try to force me to do everything from my phone. I do not run my life from my phone.
I’m debating whether or not to try small, container-friendly cucumbers and eggplants. It’s tempting. But will the squirrels take it all before the plants can mature?
I’m also trying to figure out what makes the most sense to have on the front porch– enclosed, southern exposure, hot—and what should be out on the back balcony – covered, outside, northern exposure, available to pollinators.
I may be moving pots around a lot.
What are your plans for your garden in the coming season?
