I remember when The Downlink from The Planetary Society had cool facts that they shared about planetary science.
Lately, it hasn’t been so much. And this week it’s about budget cuts to missions.
This is not what I signed up for. Is it too much to ask that we not hinder the promotion of planetary science by making political policy the main focus?
Also, the ongoing problems with the apps and websites are really, really bad. I am going to say that this is self-sabotage at this point.

I have about half an hour every morning to listen to podcasts after dropping my kid to school and driving to work. I’ve been a planetary society member for decades now, and have recently started to follow the planetary radio. One of the old shows involved the concept of quasi-moon (the Earth has seven of them), and explained the story of Venus Zoozve quasi-moon. https://www.planetary.org/planetary-radio/2024-radiolab-helps-name-a-quasi-moon

Radiolab helps name a quasi-moon of Venus

This week on Planetary Radio, Latif Nasser, co-host of Radiolab shares the story behind the naming of Zoozve, a quasi-moon of Venus.

Science funding was hit in 2025. What does that mean for the future?

December 23, 20254:27 PM ET, 11-Minute Listen Transcript

2025 was a hard year for science. The Trump administration upended federal funding for all kinds of scientific pursuits, slashing budgets across agencies like NASA, NIH and NOAA. PR’s Rob Stein and Katia Riddle spoke to scientists and officials who worry that those cuts could cause the United States to lose its competitive edge as a global hub for research and innovation, and steer future generations away from careers in science.

Anytime I get worried about my place in the universe, I remember this photo taken by the JWST in 2022, and I remember that it represents a portion of the sky equal in size to one grain of sand on the end of a finger, held at arm's length.

Planetary Society Petition Against NASA Science Cuts

Open to signatures from across the globe. Please #boost - for many of us it is the only action we can take, so let's take it!

The current administration's 2026 budget request includes a staggering 47% cut to NASA's science programs as part of a 25% cut to NASA overall. This is an extinction-level event for the Earth and space science communities, upending decades of work and tens of billions in taxpayers' investment.
