✧ Douglas fir ✧
The Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) is an evergreen conifer species in the pine family, Pinaceae, which is native to western North America. The trees grow to a height of around 20 to 100 metres (70 to 330 feet) and commonly reach 2.4 metres (8 feet) in diameter. The largest coast Douglas firs regularly live for mor...

Dear Friends,
This #pine locate in the eastern #SierraNevada #Mountains in #Nevada (elev. about 8,00 ft / 2,500 m ) with what I think are the male cones (strobili). Not sure what kind of pine it is but it is very appealing. 🌲
I hope you have a lovely day.

This study surveyed the literature to get a sense of whether #Fagaceae (e.g. oaks) are gradually substituting #Pinaceae (e.g. pines) in #TemperateForests.

Intraspecific variability of #serotiny in #Pinus #banksiana
Rear-edge populations (with low #fire frequency) are less serotinous & more variably than range-core #fireprone pops where serotiny is more uniformly high, by Pelletier et al https://besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/1365-2745.14041 #JEcol
That is, results for Pinus banksiana (#boreal) are quite similar to those for P. #halepensis & P. #pinaster (#mediterranean species).

Estimating the age of #mediterranean #pines & their #cones is tricky, as they often produce more than 1 whorl per year!
Pic: #Pinus halepensis. From the bottom upwards: 🔵 arrows: 1st whorl of a growing season; 🔴 & 🟢 arrows: 2nd & 3rd whorl of the same year. Note the #serotinous (closed) #cones in the left pic.
