Today I got my record of number of wood pigeons seen, as there were big groups flying off from the same small forest.
I got to 850 pigeons, counting the groups by 10's and standing and waiting for about 10 minutes.
When I walked home again, I could see that at least a large number of them are now hanging around the small forest near the house.
I still have to look up if they aren't supposed to fly further south.

Better picture of my little house guest. It perked up very well after a good feed and night's rest somewhere warm dry. It's been handed over to a pigeon rehabber to be fed and socialised with other pigeons, ready for release. Rehabber agreed it's a youngster that's struggled after fledging, so just needs a helping hand to get its strength up. #PigeonPost #PigeonsOfMastodon

One way in which the books were ahead of their time was in the prominence of female characters. It was Nancy Blackett of the Amazon, not John Walker of the Swallow, who resonated with me and with countless others. In #Swallows&Amazons, 4 of the 6 young leads are girls; in #WinterHoliday and #PigeonPost (the two best of the series for me) it's 5 out of 8. As an adult I've grown to appreciate the imaginative Titty and the empathetic aspiring #writer Dorothea as much as the rumbustious Nancy.
