Charles Mingus - Blues & Roots

Mingus could do so much...but the album that people think of is often this—the one he put out to prove he could swing with the best of them.

And, hell, he sure could, accompanied by Booker Ervin (tenor), Dannie Richmond (drums), Horace Parlan (piano), Jackie McLean (alto), Jimmy Knepper (trombone), John Handy (alto), Mal Waldron (piano), Pepper Adams (baritone), and Willie Dennie (trombone).

Re-listen, but the recent(ish) Tone Poet edition, which is an even better mastering job, and a great pressing from RTI.

Live at the Village Vanguard is a live album by American jazz trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie recorded on October 1, 1967, at the Village Vanguard and released on Solid State later that year.

The AllMusic review stated "These lengthy performances (all but one of the seven songs are over 11 minutes) contain some loose and rambling moments but also plenty of creative playing by this unusual group of all-stars" - Wikipedia

Pepper Adams Quintet

This 1957 reissue is the first release from Gammaut (https://www.gammaut.com) and if this is anything to go by, wow.

Not only did they do a great job remastering, the packaging has a detailed book inside about Adams and the band, plus the process.

None of which would mean much if the music wasn't good, and it is.

Exquisite...and $50, including shipping. Hard to call $50 a bargain, but...

Hank Mobley - Poppin'

Add another one to the "old session (in this case, 1957) on the shelf until years later (1980)" pile. And even then, it was only released in Japan until recently.

Craziness.

Well, at least it's out now—a great hard bop session with Art Farmer (trumpet), Pepper Adams (baritone), Sonny Clark (piano), Paul Chambers (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums).
