Tensioni e scontri sono stati registrati nel corso della manifestazione contro la presenza di Israele alla Biennale di Venezia. Il corteo pro Pal, di circa 2mila persone, ha tentato di forzare il cordone della polizia verso l'Arsenale, l'area espositiva che ospita il padiglione dello Stato ebraico, ma è stato bloccato. Oggi alla mostra si era presentaot anche il ministro dei Trasporti, Matteo Salvini. "Sono qui per Venezia e per la Biennale e per mettere il mio mattoncino per porre fine a polemiche che non dovrebbero coinvolgere una realtà straordinaria come la Fondazione Biennale - ha detto il leader del Carroccio - Godiamoci l'arte, godiamoci gli artisti al di là delle polemiche, delle bandiere, dei boicottaggi perché un giorno c'è quello sulla Russia, poi su Israele, poi c'è il boicottaggio sugli Stati Uniti. Io continuo a ritenere che Pietrangelo Buttafuoco abbia ragione. Penso che l'arte, come lo sport, visto che abbiamo appena finito le Olimpiadi, debbano essere esenti da conflitti. Non penso che gli artisti americani, cinesi, israeliani o russi siano portavoce di conflitti in corso".
Salvini critica duramente l'atteggiamento dell'Unione europea, che si era fortemente opposta alla presenza di Mosca, considerandolo "volgare". E ha aggiunto: "È come dire 'non fai quello che ti dico' allora 'ti tolgo i soldi', come i bambini che perdono sul campo di pallone e vanno via col pallone. Possiamo fare a meno dei loro 2 milioni di euro". Il ministro si scaglia quindi contro il boicottaggio degli aristi, sottolineando che non siano "protagonisti o complici" delle guerre che ci sono in corso. "Oggi mi sembra che stiano boicottando Israele, ieri la Russia, domani gli Stati Uniti, dopodomani magari l'Italia. Io penso che l'arte non debba conoscere né censure, né bavaglio, né boicottaggio, né chiusure. E quindi sono qua a onorare una delle città più belle del mondo e una delle realtà culturali più belle e più importanti del mondo. Al di là dei conflitti in corso io penso che realtà come quella della Biennale servano a riavvicinare popoli, lingue, culture in un momento difficile. Sono cento Paesi che portano il meglio della loro arte a Venezia e io ne sono orgoglioso".

The “Pal for Yes” march, of approximately 2,000 people, attempted to force the police cordon towards the Arsenale, the exhibition area hosting the Jewish State’s pavilion, but was blocked. I continue to believe that Buttafuoco is right. I think that art, like sport, given that we have just finished the Olympics, should be exempt from conflicts. I don’t think that American, Chinese, Israeli or Russian artists are spokespeople for ongoing conflicts.”
Salvini harshly criticizes the attitude of the European Union, which had strongly opposed Moscow’s presence, considering it “vulgar.” He added: “It’s like saying ‘you don’t do what I tell you’ then ‘I take away your money,’ like children who lose the ball on the soccer field and run off with it. We can do without their 2 million euros.” The Minister then attacks the boycott of artists, emphasizing that they are not “protagonists or accomplices” of the wars currently taking place. “Today it seems to me that they are boycotting Israel, yesterday Russia, tomorrow the United States, the day after tomorrow perhaps Italy. I think that art should not know censorship, muzzle, boycott, or closures. And so I am here to honor one of the most beautiful cities in the world and one of the most beautiful and important cultural realities in the world. Beyond the current conflicts, I believe that realities like the Biennale serve to bring people, languages, and cultures closer together in a difficult moment. There are one hundred countries that bring the best of their art to Venice, and I am proud of it.”
