Dave's team cares for 7 infants currently. It's $60 a month to provide milk and diapers for each infant. In addition to the infants, he tries to feed the older children as often as he can, currently about once a week. He doesn't have funding, and relies on direct aid just like Palestinian families do. Please consider making regular small donations to:

In Gaza there are an estimated 17k orphans according to UNICEF. In the UK, one man is working with a team of Palestinians to gather them up off the streets and feed, educate, and shelter them. My friend, Dave Hine, is collecting donations to fund his current identified total of 300+ orphans. He is building a camp for them on a shoestring budget and needs your help desperately.

topic of harry and meghan’s visit to australia came up… along with some comments about a documentary they apparently made for netflix about a ugandan orphanage… and how australian media re ignoring this.

but my reply has become a rant.

as i still need to vent but would rather not hijack someone else’s timeline, have retreated to my own
——-

australian mainstream media are not interested in diversity of any description, you would think from the churn of regular topics the target demographic is still anglo christian heterosexual allistic etc — the greater the distance from australia or britain, the less important

it’s easier to to import/ re-sell racist rubbish from USA/UK (meghan was a cow to some maid in the palace) than come up with original commentary on harry and meghan. the topic of many articles is not actually harry and meghan themselves, but the hating harry and meghan industry. but i ask you — are they really any worse than other people with w⚓️y values? yep, too many air miles, too much to spend on whatever… but isn’t this what our whole mass consumer culture is about? i don’t get it, personally, but when i go to the hairdresser and flip thru old magazines, each issue is built around flogging pointless and obscenely overpriced crap. it can’t be wrong only when harry and meghan are into it.

the entire royal family are clueless twats. tho’ i don’t think they are necessarily hateful.
what about william presenting as anti-racist and pro-conservationist? for generations their family engaging in wholesale slaughter of animals on safari, they now own a swathe of land “for conservation purposes” it has never occurred to them that if they gave some of that land back, the original owners would be perfectly capable of protecting bio-diversity themselves.
let’s not pretend harry is the only one who is clueless

poverty porn and white man’s burden porn (about failures in the global south) sell. it’s not the content, but the condescension that matters. and really, we would rather reserve our criticism for other countries than look in our own backyards.

as for orphanages — anglo culture especially has no respect at all for human life, and children have always been considered non-people, or potential labour at best.
for a long time australian orphanages overflowed with what joanna penglase called “orphans of the living” because there were too many un-cherished children for a foster system to cope. but why would we rather remove children than provide parents/ single parents with a decent world to live in — real job opportunities, real housing affordability, social supports? cos our culture is built on divine right, — the rich man in his castle the poor man at his gate, it’s somehow against god’s will to help poor people.

yep. our media really doesn’t look at what matters, at all

Manvir Singh's figure of “the triumphant orphan”: Oliver Twist and Jane Eyre, but surely not Pip

In an article on whether a "key to all mythologies" could be created, Manvir Singh mentions the figure of the "triumphant orphan" and lists examples from Cinderella and Jane Eyre to Harry Potter and Igbo stories from Nigeria. Before I began reading the list, I thought of "Oliver Twist" (1839)
