It doesn't help that we know that Turn A Gundam takes place around 3000 years after UC, both in the series it's stated to be over 2500 years ago and in the book 2001 Correct Century states about 3000 years ago so 1000 years after UC as Sunrise claims is not possible with that timeline.

500 years after Turn A isn't enough to have a food crisis that nearly destroys earth a second time and have them fully recover AND advance as much as they have, even with help from space via the photon batteries (which also makes no sense, it's an orbital elevator, you can do solar).

Here's my theory on why there's dispute on when this takes place between Sunrise and Tomino. The food crisis is something that would take place on a devastated earth, but the tech is too advanced for a post turn A (destruction) world that takes place before Turn A (series). So someone on the team messed up, whether it was Tomino or someone else it doesn't work with the timeline in either capacity.
