American author Manly Wade Wellman was born on this date in 1903.

After befriending Vance Randolph, an acclaimed folklorist and expert on Ozark mountain magic and traditions he learnt about the folk traditions of the secluded people of the American back country along with its folk music.

This went on to inform his fantasy and horror stories set in the Appalachian Mountains, which drew on the native folklore of the region.

A good introduction to these is Who Fears the Devil? a collection of short stories featuring Silver John, a wandering balladeer who frequently encounters creatures and superstitions from the folk tales of the mountain people.

The tales are all very atmospheric and more than a little out of the ordinary.

#OnThisDay in 1895, Adela Breton and Pablo Solorio arrived in Liverpool having caught a boat from Canada. They were heading to Adela's home in Bath to study and catologue pre-Columbian Mexican artefacts.

There is a full chapter on Adela in the junior edition of Unsung Women in Somerset and she features in the standard edition as well as On This Day in Somerset.
