Came across this classic from an older, more civilized era of Youtube. I still use "I wasn't even there!" to this day

In the 70s and 80s, party lines weren’t just for chatting, they became underground meeting places for phreakers. By exploiting quirks in telephone switching systems or abusing conference call features, hackers created their own backchannel communications networks. These lines operated in the shadows of the phone system, often bridging cities and time zones, and served as the social backbone of the phreaking scene. Handles were exchanged, techniques shared, and alliances formed — all in real time. Some lines had gatekeepers or required specific access tricks. It was raw, chaotic, and often illegal, but for many it was their first taste of networked rebellion.

In 1991, long before modern browsers and flashy websites, the University of Minnesota introduced Gopher. A text-based, menu-driven protocol that let users browse information across the internet in a clean and structured way. No JavaScript, no pop-ups, no CSS, just nested menus and pure content. It briefly ruled the net, especially in universities and research circles.

But when the university announced plans to charge licensing fees, and HTTP emerged with the freedom and flexibility of hypertext links, Gopher’s momentum crumbled almost overnight.

Still, Gopher never completely vanished. A small but passionate community keeps it alive through Gopherholes. Sites accessible via vintage clients or modern gateways. It’s minimal, fast, and nostalgic. For those who crave a web without surveillance capitalism or bloat, Gopher offers a quiet corner of the net that still whispers of what could have been.

@BruceBurhans hey Bruce! George here. I'm in the industry for like 25 years, seen the rise of web in 1993. Got off twitter a few months back when I had enough of the madness.

Anyways, started as a developer, did all kinds of roles, I'm looking after security in a small firm now.

You'll love here, it's like the #oldnet. Less bots, less trolls, no adverts, more civil discussion.

A few weeks ago, my good friend Blunaowl sent me a Google Drive archive of a disc containing 22,000 animated GIFs. Today I've put that up on my web space, so you can browse as it was originally intended (for better or worse).

Enjoy!

OFC I don't expect those slots to be #ISA or something but something like the #OldNet or #Wifi232-alike #NIC should be possible...

I mean if I had the €€€€€ and skills I'd likely try to build one of those myself for the #CommanderX16, but even a simple #RS232 card that can interface with some "#FakeModem" - #Network adapter would be sufficient.
