Aloha, infosec folks and everyone like me trying to understand what on earth some of these Extremely Clever People (TM) are talking about.
IRL I'm a dad and husband, struggle to function without coffee, read all manner of stuff and think that the BBC In Our Time podcast may be the single greatest piece of broadcasting every created. If you haven't already, check it out. There is, quite literally, something for everyone.
Professionally, I'm an IT contractor who has been tinkering with, breaking and - more usually - fixing all manner of IT things for nearly thirty years. I started out as a tech for a PC retailer in the 90s and, through a combination of blind luck, the right friends and a modicum of talent, somehow ended up being the guy people come and talk to to get a steer on how to do things where I currently work.
Bloody hell. Almost thirty years...
For most of the last 20 years or so I've been an AD guy, a Vmware guy, a 3PAR guy, a general-Windows-Adminy-Stuff guy, a quite-interested-in-infosec guy and a dabbles-in-Linux-a-bit guy. I can cobble together scripts, but I am #notacoder. I seem to end up fielding a lot of questions that come my way because someone told someone else "oh, he might know..." This is an entirely undeserved reputation.
