I had a person stop by my art vendor booth one evening when I was doing Friday Night Market here in Eureka, CA. It’s a street fair that combines performance, art, food, beer/wine, and a Farmer’s Market. It’s quite fun.

But anyway, they suggested I think about doing a Northern Spotted Owl. They’d seen my other owls but were looking for one that was specific regionally. We have a Northern Spotted Owl in our local zoo, and she’s a real favorite. So I thought I should jump on the opportunity. I was all too happy to continue my local flora and fauna journey, creating work that’s all about the Redwood Coast.

So I made this little one initially as a card itself, but then used the same image to create a nice Art Nouveau image. The final piece is called “Forest Fellow”. I used Procreate and drew it all by hand—no generative slop tools at any point in the process. You can watch the livestream recordings of its making here:

#Trump #ExecutiveOrder calling for quarterly #GodSquad #convention under #ESA should alarm everyone who cares about #EndangeredSpecies & #biodiversity.

#EO is specific to #Energy projects but sets dangerous broader precedent—with #ForestService's proposed #Amendment to the #NorthwestForestPlan likely to #jeopardize #NorthernSpottedOwl #survival & #recovery, very real danger #TrumpAdmin will condemn #NSO to #extinction for more #timber boardfeet.

Could Trump Use the ‘God Squad’ to Override Environmental Law?

The president wants to convene the rarely used panel, which has the power to carve out exemptions to the Endangered Species Act. Here’s what to know.

The New York Times

This article on the threat of Barred owls to Northern spotted owls and the mitigating cull to try and save them reminded me of something Nevada did to try to 'save' deer. They spent $3 million trying to cull as many coyotes as possible, believing that predator control was the answer. It wasn't and it won't be here. It's the habitat. It's almost always the habitat.

Over the past 80 years, one of the most resilient and hearty owls has practically engulfed a continent. Not everyone is pleased.

WA lands commissioner wary of federal plan to kill thousands of owls

Washington's public lands commissioner expressed concern about a federal proposal to kill barred owls to help the threatened northern spotted owl.

The Seattle Times

For several weeks now I've heard an owl hooting in our neighborhood. We live on a wooded hill—lot's of houses but still much like a forest. I spent some time online researching what kind of owl it might be based on its call. I think we have a #NorthernSpottedOwl nearby. But I'm not yet sure. These owls listed as threatened due to habitat destruction, mostly by the timber/lumber industry. Some of you might remember the battles over the owl that raged in the 1980s & 1990s.
