This story fascinates me. He puts a blanket over his shoulders and gets shot because friendlies mistook him for a Dakota Native. The subtext here is that Natives in blankets were being shot at without much thought. At least that's how I read it.

It was found in 1987 in a gravel pit within the city limits. New Ulm borders the western bank of the glacial River Warren’s river valley, which now contains the Minnesota River.

It was discovered face down with just the backside of one horn exposed according to the Nature Center's curator. It measures 66cm (26") across the horn cores.
