Bombay built the world's second largest Art Deco district in the 1930s, blending streamlined modernism with Indian cultural markers into a uniquely Bombay architecture. https://www.artdecomumbai.com/research/bombays-transition-to-modernity-the-dawn-of-art-deco-in-bombay/ #ArtDeco #Bombay #1930s
Bombay’s transition to Modernity- The Dawn of Art Deco in Bombay - Art Deco

The urban development of Bombay as a capitalist port city, was a result of the distinct location of the western Indian Colony. Sociologically, the early Victorian Bombay emerged as a capitalist city with class differentiation determining the spatial pattern of the city. The colonial / indigenous spatial dualism was just an outcome of this urban

Close-up of the main entry of the Mullen Building. The brick work is simply stunning. And the delicate ironwork overlaid onto the windows in the doors and transom are exquisite.

The entire building reads as flamboyant but with a sense of gravitas.

A close-up of the Mullen Building's entry tower and the amazing red-brick vertical projections that are individually a master-class in masonry and abstract brick expressionism.

The red-brick projections are applied as oversized pilasters with a parapet at the top but evoke so many things: frozen flames, lava cascading down a masonry wall, mineral crystals. The faceted detailing within each of the red-brick "pillars of flame" is intense.

This is the Mullen Building located in Denver's City Park West neighborhood, just east of downtown. It was built in 1934 and features a "Gothic Deco" hybrid style. More precisely, it's architectural style could be described as "Late Gothic Revival with Deco Detailing" or perhaps "Art Deco with Gothic Revival Influences."

Clearly, the vertical red-brick projections are the building's signature move. They repeat in a regular cadence around all four sides of the structure, evoking fence posts or perhaps organ pipes. The vertical thrust of each of the red-brick projections is Gothic in spirit, but employs Art Deco geometry that is abstract, faceted, and visually impactful.

The building faces east, so I photographed it in the early morning to catch the golden morning sun, which really highlights the rich colors and high contrast between the creamy buff field brick and the saturated red sculptural brick.

Tucked away in the woodlands of Pennsylvania lies a unique fleet of streamlined 1930s and 1950s streetcars. These St Louis and Pullman-Standard carriages have glorious vintage Americana vibes.

Many of these date to the height of the Streamline Moderne era. At this time, streamlined aerodynamic forms replaced the geometric shapes and excessive ornamentation of the earlier Art Deco style.
