It really boils me when people doing these Greek myth movies are using the wrong attires (800 years off target!). The new pic released from Chris Nolan's #Odyssey ( https://variety.com/2025/film/news/the-odyssey-matt-damon-odysseus-christopher-nolan-1236311018/ ) shows an attire from the Classical period, and not from the #Mycenaean times. Here's how they really looked at the time instead.

Also, please stop showing Greek landscapes completely bare in #movies. We have trees. Especially on the mainland.

~ Minoan & Mycenaean Fashion, part III ~

Mycenaean fashion was heavily influenced by its Minoan predecessor. Mainland Greek women adopted a similar flounced skirt and silhouette. However, it is notable that at certain points in Mycenaean history a more conservative closed bodice was preferred and, on occasion, just a simplistic tunic, sometimes belted. They wore knit shawls or cloaks over their dresses and secured their elaborate, twisted hairstyles with ivory hairpins.

Mycenaean women are often depicted with a distinctive accessory: the polos. A polos is a round, cylindrical crown, shaped almost like a side-turned wheel that was worn on the head. It was commonly sported by powerful women.

Between c. 1250 - c. 1100 BCE, a series of earthquakes, droughts, famines, wars, and the invasion of Sea Peoples whom we know little about brought on the Bronze Age Collapse. This series of disasters brought down some of the Mycenaean civilisation and heralded the Greek Dark Ages (c. 1100 - c. 750 BCE) in which the Bronze Age styles were eventually replaced by the peplos and the chiton − the clothing we most commonly associate with ancient Greece.

And here's another:

Sure, it doesn't feel familiar, but it's how they were at the time.

@eugenialoli Same with all the white temples and statues when movies do ancient Rome and Greece.

The things were coloured and painted and decorated with bright gem stones! The colors were vibrant and bright and clashing, as pigment remains show. I can't look at a single white statue or building in movie about ancient Rome/Greece. It takes me out of the story entirely.

@eugenialoli What do you think about the casting? They don't seem very Greek...

Once I heard Nolan was doing the movie I listened to the Odyssey audiobook but since I missed big chunks of it I just ordered this:

@jet Ιm ok with the casting (we know Nolan is very particular about it anyway), although in the 60s they'd have 1-2 greek actors in smaller working when they had a greek move made. I'd expect this done today too if it was another director. It's just that Nolan is particular about it...
