Iran, the crossroads between diplomacy and war. Trump: "Our commitment will be rewarded."
Time is running out and tension is rising. Negotiations between the US and Iran continue to falter, and for Donald Trump, “finishing the job” might be necessary. The US president is thus returning to threaten Tehran and dictate the terms for any agreement that could end the war. Washington, however, is holding firm: sanctions will not be eased in exchange for a resolution regarding enriched uranium. The agreement “must be perfect” for the tycoon, who has made it clear: “I didn’t do all this to get a lousy one.”
Trump then issued a warning to Arab countries to join the Abraham Accords to reach an agreement with the Islamic Republic. “I think they owe us – he added – I won’t say what is conditional and what isn’t, but we are asking for it strongly. However, the White House is excluding the possibility of transferring Uranium to Russia or China. The prohibition is categorical: Tehran “will never have a nuclear weapon.”
State Secretary Marco Rubio was more cautious, emphasizing: “Diplomacy is always the first option and we continue to work on this.” And regarding the memorandum of understanding made public by Tehran, the response is clear: “It is a total invention.” In any case, negotiations continue. The Deputy Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran, Ali Bagheri, confirmed that indirect contacts with the United States continue, specifying however that the nuclear issue is not at the center of the negotiations.
Meanwhile, Israel continues its attacks in Lebanon. The IDF announced that it struck more than 150 targets and Hezbollah terrorists in the cities of Tyre and Nabatieh, as well as in the Beqaa Valley, in the last 24 hours. The Israeli army also issued a general evacuation warning, inviting residents of southern Lebanon to move north of the Zahrani River: “All areas south of the river are considered combat zones.”
In the meantime, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed the killing of Hamas military commander Mohammed Odeh in an operation in Gaza that took place yesterday. Odeh, appointed to the position last week, was the successor to Izz al-Din al-Haddad, killed this month. Hamas also confirmed the death of the commander.
