Intervista a Bryan Talbot, il padre del graphic novel britannico
Finally got around to reading the latest instalment in Bryan Talbot's epochal 'Luther Arkwright' series. I thought it was brilliant, although some of that may be nostalgia speaking, if I'm honest!

5/5: I've been waiting to read this book since it came out—I bought it immediately, but it took me that long to find where I'd stashed the first two books in the series and re-read them! The Legend of Luther Arkwright is a wonderful third act in the saga of Bryan Talbot's best-known creation. In Heart of empire (1999) he used the highly polished, full-colour style that he'd developed over the years since he began the Arkwright saga (and used to great effect in the Grandville series), but in this book he returns to the looser, scratchy pen-and-ink of the original The Adventures of Luther Arkwrigh...
‘Heart of Empire’ is the sequel to Bryan Talbot’s masterpiece, ‘The Adventures of Luther Arkwright’. It’s a much slicker comic, less profound maybe, but a brilliant and subversive slice of high-octane entertainment.

4/5: Many years passed between the first instalments of The Adventures of Luther Arkwright and the creation of Heart of empire, Bryan Talbot's sequel to the comic that made his name as a creator. In that time Talbot had progressed from an underground experimentalist to an accomplished commercial comics artist, and a highly regarded writer-illustrator. His development as an artist is immediately obvious on opening this second instalment in the Arkwright saga. The original series had been characterised by intricate, highly worked illustration, that often traded movement for detail. This is not a c...
I re-read this amazing comic (Bryan Talbot’s ‘The Adventures of Luther Arkwright’) just to remind myself of the plot. It’s still jaw-dropping and astonishingly beautiful 35 years after I first read it!

5/5: Bryan Talbot's The Adventures of Luther Arkwright is a formative influence on me—all of my ideas about storytelling and worldbuilding probably have a bit of this comic in them. I first read it as the original run was being completed at the end of the 80s, and then re-read it as a collected paperback, perhaps twenty years ago. I've just re-read it in order to re-appraise myself of the plot, preparatory to reading The Legend of Luther Arkwright. I've owned that (the second sequel) since it came out in 2022, but I've delayed reading it until I could dig its predecessors out of the enormous pil...
