I swear, ever since I updated to the 9070XT, LotRO occasionally gets confused that it's running so fast on Ultra settings that it glitches out. I'll be running along and suddenly the terrain objects (bushes, stumps, grass clumps etc) will blink out and then a second later fade back in. I also get an inch wide band of "static" in the horizontal center of the screen that lasts for like a quarter of a second when I turn around. I spose I could try troubleshooting it, mess with the Wine settings or the games GFX settings but honestly it doesn't really bother me enough. Only happens once or twice a session (most of which are min 2 hours long).

I just imagine the game going "WAIT HOW AM I RUNNING AT 120FPS ON ULTRA SETTINGS!? *blink* OK I GUESS, STILL FEELS WRONG"

Kinda curious what it'll do when I get the 9800X3D installed soon, lol.

I have figured out what the problem with The Last Caretaker is. It's "Global Illumination". When I set it to Low, my CPU settles down to a still kinda balmy 82C. Bit high imo, but ok. (Yeah I know AMD chips are "designed to run hot" I just don't like seeing 8 on the front of the temp, just a me thing)

However.. the frame rate drops from around 75ish to fucking TWENTY, TWO ZERO. With dips into the TEENS. TF. If I try to FSR it back to playable, the CPU BBQ kicks back in and it's pushing 90C. So I cannot fix it.

Went to the game's Steam Discussion page and searched for "Global Illumination". Heartening to see 5 pages of posts pop up. So it's not just me. Less heartening is the fact there are zero Dev responses.

I really wanna like and recommend this game.. but I just can't when there's an issue like this that isn't even garnering a response. I do like the premise and the mechanics etc. Just wish the Devs would learn how to "optimize" Unreal Engine 5.

Stupid game prob the sole reason my thermal paste got pumped out and dried, forcing me to buy new paste, then a (soon to arrive) new heatsink, even contemplate buying a new CPU, lol. Damn but Unreal 5 sucks.

Arctic Awakening
(Multi, XP'd on PC via Steam)
Marooned in the Alaskan wilds with a court appointed "therapy bot" Kai is confronted with mysterious facilities and his past as he struggles to survive and be rescued.
This 5 part episodic walking sim/adventure game has some serious Firewatch vibes. Not entirely shocking as it's a Unity FPS perspective game which they tend to look similar. I dig this lower poly "cartoon like" art style tho. Better than "hi res Unreal jank" any day IMO.
There's a bunch of interesting introspective type conversations happening in the game. Also not surprising given the nature of the main story. Kai is an "absent" father of 2 kids, which is why he's had a court appoint the "therapy bot". I also find it interesting that the game starts out with the usual Telltale "People will remember your choices" but unlike Telltale games, you don't get notifications like "<Name> will remember that".
The gameplay is pretty solid, most of the time. There were a couple times where progression felt a little tedious as I could see where things were headed but there wasn't a way to get there any faster. I do like that there's a few places where they actually "cut" a scene to prevent it from becoming tedious, as there's times you're tasked to "physically" do something that would be a pain to complete, so they cut it after you do enough to "get the idea across".
Technically speaking this was a relatively painless experience on my Linux PC. Had no crashes or other software related oddness. Did have one "bug" where at the start of a scene I was tasked with placing some rocks, the log said "anywhere" but there's a specific place it's supposed to happen and that "physical prompt" failed to initiate, requiring a scene restart. Other than that, smooth sailing thru the 9.6hr playtime.
If you like walking sims, FP adventure games, Firewatch etc, I would definitely suggest checking this one out. 👍 👍

Arctic Awakening

A first-person narrative adventure game set in the unforgiving Arctic after a plane crash, sending you and a court-mandated therapy robot on a journey to find your lost co-pilot while discovering mysteries buried beneath the ice.

Arctic Awakening
I’ve got my PC almost fully set up, going to have to invest into some fans for my case in the future but other than that it’s pretty smooth sailing.

I’ve got some goals to work on stuff, first of all the Minecraft UK City Mod is an ongoing project for our next major release of the mod.

Secondly I’ve been trying to build a full overhaul of my vex.blue, the current goal is to massively work on getting the site full of all the information that is currently only on the live site as well as what has been needing to release on it for so long.

I feel I need to update all the information on here more often, so hopefully will do mini updates more often.

@samuelsantaella @itsfoss I agree - that is the only real reason. #YotLD is not about anything technical, nor about market share! The true practical definition of #YotLD is when people can simply walk in to physical stores. and buy affordable laptops with #LinuxPreinstalled.

Remember, most people don't install Windows or macOS on their computers. In fact, they have no concept of an operating system - it's just a computer. They are only concerned with using the apps!

Finally, I am making myself a holidays present and ordering a new (mini) barebone PC tomorrow.
I think I will go with a #Gigabyte Brix, #AMD Ryzen 7 4800U, 2x8GB RAM #Kingston Fury (3200Mhz) and a #Samsung 970 Evo Plus 500GB
Any valuable objections anyone? 🙃
But I think this comes completely handy with the latest #Linuxmint 20.3 release just around the corner 👏
