Im Januar habe ich den Alltagsrechner vom Mac auf einen Linux-Laptop migriert.

- alle Daten sortiert, gesichtet
- Email, Kalender, Adressbuch auf Thunderbird. Dabei viel im Laufe der Zeit von Apple kaputt gemachtes repariert (Apple Mail hat mal Jahreweise die Email-Datums-Stempel gelöscht... nach dem Import als .mbox war alles wieder gut! Hätte Apple also eigentlich auch reparieren können.)
- Apple Messages (und Facetime) wird schwer zu ersetzen, geht aber mit Linux nicht. Daher "+1" in Form von Signal, was vor Jahren mal nicht geklappt hatte, jetzt aber tut.
- Apple Fotos (alles lokal) migriert auf Digikam. Ab 2026 alles neu ist schon dort, 100.000+ Bilder von früher kommen peu a peu, klappt aber anscheinend.
- Medien (Musik, Hörbücher, Filme, eigene FIlme) sind strukturiert in DRM-freien Formaten, probiere verschiedene Clients noch aus.

Nur mit Platform-unabhängigem Datenbestand hat man eine Chance!

I can report back that I have listened to the whole #HardFork / #SearchEngine episode and it *is* worth finishing. Sure, it could have been better if instead of making it an experiment to run their own vibe-coded instance, they just signed up for accounts on existing instances, but I still find it encouraging that the #Fediverse is being talked about more widely. It takes me back to the time (showing my age) when the Internet was new, and URLs were only understood by geeks (of which I am one) and I saw one written in its full glory (http://…) on the side of a rally car at a Motorsport event. That rocked my world, and I knew right there and then that the Internet would go mainstream. Will the Fediverse also go mainstream (and what challenges would that bring), or will it be forever in the same bucket as the year of #LinuxOnTheDesktop?

As I build my new home desktop workstation (the previous one was 10 years old), I'm realizing that I've now been using #Linux on the Desktop for over 31 years, since mid-1994.

The fastest way for me to check how long it has been was to go and look for the "XFree86 P9000 Server Release Notes" since I had to write a driver for my Diamond Viper card before I could get out of terminal land and into X11.

Linux has come a long way since then, and my new machine is a few thousand times more performant than the one that I started with.

KDE Fedora 43 upgrade was so smooth 🤩! Some companies are famous for trying to make things that "just work", but this particular FOSS, maintained-by-volunteers OS raises the bar to "you don't even know something substantial happened" levels of just works.

One of the things that make me suspect #Wayland maybe isn’t the solution to #LinuxOnTheDesktop Finally is that every time I have something Wayland-enabled that doesn’t behave like I want it to and I’d like for something I think is trivial to happen it opens up a gaping maw of horrors.

Example: I’d like to remove the mouse cursor from my weather display, which has no mouse and no keyboard and runs the ”only show things” compositor.

Difficulty tier: impossible.
