I'm joining the folk who #LeaveGitHub for alternative forges. I admit to mostly using it as an offsite backup service but I sometimes contribute. What are the viable new homes? I'm US based, long retired and a hobbyist, solo developer who doesn't mind paying reasonable fees for access.

I've now moved another 31 repositories from GitHub to Codeberg since yesterday... I think I'm going to take a break. I have 144 repos total on GitHub; at least many of them are just forks of other projects, but this is still a lot to go through. 😹
I know I'm late on getting some of my repos off GitHub, but at least I'm finally getting it done.

Since last year, this blog has been running on Hugo. For a while, I used a repository on GitHub that would build and deploy to GitHub Pages. Microsoft is currently targeted by the BDS campaign, which is enough of a reason to minimize or outright eliminate my use of their services (even free ones). GitHub also has a contract with ICE and has whole-heartedly embraced AI, which means anything — including my shitty code and nonsensical ramblings — on their platform is fed to Copilot. Suffice to say, there are a number of reasons to move away from it.
@stairjoke thanks for this. I hadn't checked #Codeberg out so assumed it was a company - now I see it is an EU non profit I'm in.
Have registered and will join as a paying member shortly.
We should focus on what distinguishes Codeberg and more will join.
