"Y flodeugerdd gyntaf o lenyddiaeth cwiar yn Gymraeg"

“Ddaeth y syniad llynedd, yn rhannol oherwydd Llyfrau Lliwgar y clwb llyfrau LHDTC+ [Cymraeg] cyntaf yng Nghymru sydd bellach yn cwrdd ym Mangor ac yng Nghaerdydd.

"Ac mi oedden ni wedi penderfynu bod yn rhaid cael testun yn Gymraeg a thestun yn Saesneg bob yn ail oherwydd prinder deunydd Cymraeg – testunau, llyfrau, cerddi cwiar yn Gymraeg.

"A wedyn meddwl, 'dan ni’n licio bob math o flodeugerddi yng Nghymru – Hoff Gerddi Serch Cymru, Hoff Gerddi Natur Cymru, Blodeugerdd Barddas, bob math o bethau – ond doedd ‘na ddim blodeugerdd o lenyddiaeth LHDTC+ yn Gymraeg.”

Term Anniversaries- Vital Landmarks for Welsh LGBTQIA+ History – LGBTQ Cymru

Today is #transdayofvisibility ! Celebrating Jan Morris (1926-2020)- a Welsh trans woman whose 1974 memoir Conundrum was instrumental to the visibility of trans people and our transitions in the 20th Century. #traws #trawsryweddol #janmorris #LHDTC

There is one other source for the  term asexual in Welsh. The medical journal from 1986 is the earliest known usage of ‘anrhywiol’ as a human sexuality term in Welsh, but it also appears 6 years later in the 1992 edition of the Hippocrene Standard Dictionary – Welsh-English English-Welsh by H. Meurig Evans.

Since then it has seen a steady increase in usage and is being included in more and more Welsh language LGBT+ media.

Anrywiol ordinarily means asexual, but it is possible that in 2006-2008, attempts were made to move away from older archaic or offensive terminology to a new term. It's possible anrywiol was one of those attempts, but rhyngryw, whenever it originated originally, won out in the end.

In 2016 the introduction of -rhywedd (gender) instead of-ryw (sex) is printed in Geiriadur Cymraeg Gomer as Trawsryweddol (Transgender) alongside Trawsrywiol. Since then, the two terms are often printed together in dictionaries.

@llyfraublaidd As you'll see from the latest email I sent you, I was unable to find any LGBTQ+ entries in a 1993 Learners Dictionary - I hope you've found that more recent ones are a little more inclusive. (and if they're not, they jolly well should be!)

Usage picks up again in the 90s and in 1995 Geiriadur yr Academi includes several pieces of bisexual terminology (Deuryw, Deurywiol, Deurywiog) bisexual, (Deurywiad/Deurywiaid) a bisexual/bisexuals, (Deurywioldeb) bisexuality, and (yn ddeurywiol) in bisexual(ity).

Deurywiol is used in dictionaries to this day, though like with many pieces of LGBT+ terminology, inclusion is often infrequent and spread out.

GaySocs in Wales were known as Cymdeithasau Hoyw according to students in Wales in the 80s, however, I have not found any instances of this in print. Despite this, the next times it would appear in a Welsh dictionary are in 1993, 2000, 2001, 2005, 2016 and 2017.

Have you got a Welsh dictionary? Have a see if yours has Hoyw in it! Comment below if it does!

We have here a sort of archaeological record of Welsh LGBT+ terms throughout the last Century. As far as current knowledge goes, lesbian terminology history in Welsh dates back to 1973 at least. That's 50 years ago this year!

I hope you enjoyed this first instalment of Welsh LGBT words of the day history! Share this or save if you liked it and be sure to follow for the rest in the series.
