The Neilson family played a pivotal roll in the development of the iron and steel industry in Scotland, and beyond. William's uncle, James Beaumont Neilson, invented the hot-air blast process which tripled the amount of iron which could be produced per ton of coal.

The hot-air blast process was first tested at the Clyde Ironworks near Tollcross in Glasgow ithe 1820s, making it a key location for the industrial development of Scotland.

Arnewood's first resident is listed as William Neilson of the Summerlee and Mossend Iron and Steel Company. However, the only William I can find associated with that buisness died in 1882, and it seems more likely it was built for his son, Walter Neilson.

Arnewood on Cleveden Road. Constructed around 1893 with Jacobean styling, making it look more like a castle, it was one of the largest and most impressive private homes in the west end of Glasgow. It has recently been restored and is looking absolutley stunning, especially in the sun.

A row of former servants cottages tucked away out of sight behind Charles Wilson's grand 1840s Classical townhouses on Kirklee Terrace in the West End of Glasgow. They were built on a slope, with stables hidden below them that were accessed from the other side.

A Kelvinside brick found beside the River Kelvin in Glasgow. It was produced by the Kelvibside Brick Company at the Dawsholm Brickworks in Kelvindale which was in operation between the 1870s and 1930. The brickworks were situated just off what is now Cleveden road (but was then Crossloan Road) at its junction with Burlington Avenue. After the brickworks closed, this area first became the Western Hockey Club grounds and then, by the end of 1930s, housing.

The magnificent main entrance to Kelvinside Hillhead Parish Church in the west end of Glasgow. I paritcularly like the nested gothic arches around the doors and the massive wheel window above them.

A stone tramway leading up Cleveden Crescent Lane in the west of Glasgow. Consisting of slabs of smoothed granite, they reduced the friction between cartwheels and cobbled streets, while the setts in between the tramways provided grip for the horses' hooves. This allowed one horse to pull what it would otherwise take two horses to move.
