Bjorn IdleI came across a Kaka using its sharp pointy beak to get in under the bark of this tree. They do this to get at the larvae of wood-boring insects.
Found on Ulva Island, just off Stewart Island Rakiura, last week.

The #kaka is an endemic parrot of #Aotearoa #NewZealand. It's maybe not as famous as the kea, but it's also a clever and attractive bird. This one here at #pukaha wildlife centre is letting me know very subtly that - should I be in possession of a nut - it wouldn't say no to eating it. The bird featured in the photo is the Kākā, an uncommon parrot found only in New Zealand. We spotted it in the forest at Milford Sound / Piopiotahi.
