A Mohua (Yellowhead) scans around for insects then jumps from its perch to go on the hunt. They're quite small, and that yellow throat and head can be hard to see in dappled sunlight when they're up high in the trees. Lovely little birds, though.

I came across a Kaka using its sharp pointy beak to get in under the bark of this tree. They do this to get at the larvae of wood-boring insects.

Found on Ulva Island, just off Stewart Island Rakiura, last week.

Umbrella mosses and lichens in lush greens and purples on the forest floor on (edit: Ulva Island, not) Stewart Island Rakiura.

Some of those mosses look a bit like tarantulas, but I promise they're not. I would've been running away rather than taking photos otherwise...
