I came across a Kaka using its sharp pointy beak to get in under the bark of this tree. They do this to get at the larvae of wood-boring insects.

Found on Ulva Island, just off Stewart Island Rakiura, last week.

The bird featured in the photo is the Kākā, an uncommon parrot found only in New Zealand. We spotted it in the forest at Milford Sound / Piopiotahi.
