> THE present volume is a translation of one of the four Confucian canonical books called the Chung Yung, which has been translated by Dr. Legge as the ‘‘ Doctrine of the Mean.’ The Chinese word Chung means central—hence right, true, fair and square; and Yung means common, ordinary—hence universal. The two Chinese words therefore mean the true, fair and square, universal standard of right ; in short, the common-sense of right.
