The Fiat car plant in #Lingoto #Turin used to be during the 1920 one of the most advanced car factory in the world. Tempi pasati. No car has left the building since 1982 though. the most spectacular feature of the factory was the one KM long test track on the roof. Two 400 meter tracks in each side and two 100 meter steep curves. Modernist architecture in Italy is always surprising. Transparency, lightness and complex geometries seem to be answers to the monumental architectural style of the fascist Impero, although the architects building in the 1960s are mostly the same ones who worked in the 1920s and 1930s. Continuity, in other words. This gallery is located in the historic center of Ravenna. The building is structured by a simple grid of squares and rectangles. This could appear monotonous and unimaginative if it weren't for the ceiling, which is a translucent structure of hexagons, triangles and trapezoids. These geometric shapes have been used in Italian interior design since the Middle Ages. Especially in floor mosaics in the tradition of the Cosmate family.

Today's Piazza Caduti per la Liberta in #Ravenna was not designed in the spirit of freedom in the 1920s, but as a project of Italian fascism, as a new urban center and forum. The photograph shows the Nuova Casa del Littorio, the headquarters of the fascist party. Or rather, what is left of it. The building by architect Emiliano Mongioví originally included a large tower, which was blown up by the German Wehrmacht in 1944 so as not to give the advancing Allies a strategic vantage point.

As is so often the case in fascist architecture, this building also combines white natural stone with brick. An arcade of pillars connects the dynamically curved façade with a cubic block. Where the curve meets the block, the blown up tower originally rose into the sky.

On the right is the building of the INA, the Istituto Nazionale delle Assicurazioni. A project by architect Alessandro Forlati and engineer Giuseppe Machin from 1938, the monumental façade is less rationalistic than the Nuova Casa del Littorio and is structured by organizing symmetries and classic round arches.
