Based on the scales I'm pretty sure that's a carp that this American white pelican managed to snag near the #IowaRiverPowerDam along the #IowaRiverTrail in Coralville, Iowa.

Other than the usual focus & framing concerns (had to go w/ a landscape crop w/ this image) it's been my experience that it's difficult to find an angle on a gull that can't produce a beautiful image. This is a ring-billed gull flying over the #IowaRiver near the #IowaRiverPowerDam along the #IowaRiverTrail in #Coralville, Iowa.

Hi, all! The ring-billed gulls are back in large flocks up & down the Iowa River. Managed to make it to 3 different dams yesterday & they're at all 3 in large #'s. I think a yearly fish (shad) die off attracts them. Ain't much airspace left for any other birds. Took this yesterday w/ my iPhone at the #IowaRiverPowerDam.
About this time every year the # of gulls around the #IowaRiverPowerDam in #Coralville, Iowa, increases dramatically. I think they're feeding on gizzard shad which often inhabit the oxygenated waters downstream of dams. Young & yearling gizzard shad are susceptible to fluctuating water temperatures & the gulls may be timing their arrival to the spring shad die-off.

This log has been in the same location near the shore of the #IowaRiver & just upstream of the #IowaRiverPowerDam for the past 3 years. Presumably there's some underwater structures that keep it fixed in place & prevent it from drifting away & passing over the nearby dam. The local ducks & geese have found it a convenient location to rest, bask, preen, & perform their morning ablutions.

Bald eagle scores a prize along the #IowaRiver just south of the #IowaRiverPowerDam in #Coralville, Iowa. Normally they pull shad out of the river but this one looks like a perch to me. Can any fishers out there ID the fish species from the pic?
