#academicfreedom in decline - the 2024 Academic Freedom Index shows a worrying global decline, often accompanied by polarisation. Globally, Europe remains a good place to be.

A rough snapshot, but worrying nevertheless.

Last week, the European Commission launched a call for evidence regarding #research security (including #highereducation linked to international cooperation.

Before getting too nervous, this is not all too bad as a start.

- Openness is recognised as intrinsic to #science
- Emphasis on support for self-governance in #universities
- No bans on specific countries

So I had to go visit ... I have two accounts, one for legal/professional connections and one for my spare time work with exchange students and cultural exchange. My @legallaurak account is a reflection of what we can see in our timelines here with people repeating who's been suspended, saying they're done, etc. etc.. My other account though, was as though nothing has happened. People tweeting about #IntlEd and cultural exchange as usual. Two different worlds.

@uwebrandenburg @eddiepwest @Pii @cheng_yien I agree with Uwe. I'm a lawyer and have a bunch of lawyer colleagues, I work on climate and have connections there, and I work with #internationalstudents so have that as well. I haven't had trouble connecting with people on different servers -- I feel that it's more a matter of getting the people who work in #intled to come over. A lot of the people I know are still hanging onto Twitter.
