Fourth, integration: Experience is unitary; it can’t be split into independent parts without losing its essence. This requires the system’s cause-effect structure to be irreducible—partitioning it reduces information, measured by small phi (φ).

Fifth, exclusion: Experience has definite borders and grain; it’s not infinitely expansive or vague. Thus, the physical substrate must maximize irreducibility (forming a “complex”) and exclude overlapping or coarser/finer grains.

These axioms and postulates are empirically informed. For instance, studies on split-brain patients—where the corpus callosum is severed—show two semi-independent consciousnesses, supporting exclusion and integration. Neuroimaging during hallucinations or dreams reveals structured yet altered information integration, aligning with composition.

Mathematically, IIT transforms these ideas into testable predictions. A system’s state is modeled via a transition probability matrix, capturing how elements (like neurons) influence each other. One of IIT’s strengths lies in its practical applications, particularly in clinical settings. The Perturbational Complexity Index (PCI), inspired by IIT, uses TMS-EEG to perturb the brain and measure response complexity—a proxy for Φ. However, IIT suggests future architectures—perhaps neuromorphic chips with bidirectional causality—could achieve consciousness if Φ maximizes.

This ties into broader debates: If IIT is right, consciousness isn’t about intelligence but integration. A simple, highly integrated circuit might be more conscious than a vast but disjointed supercomputer. Experiments are underway; Koch’s lab is modeling minimal conscious systems, testable against behavioral correlates.

Looking ahead, IIT could revolutionize fields from ethics (animal rights based on Φ) to technology (conscious AI safeguards). Yet, it demands more empirical rigor—larger-scale brain simulations, refined proxies, and cross-theory tests.

In essence, IIT humanizes the science of mind by rooting it in our lived experiences while arming it with math.
