Antarctica, often regarded as the planet's last true wilderness, harbors unique ecosystems that support extraordinary biodiversity and contribute to global diversity and environmental stability. These ecosystems, which occupy permanently ice-free land covering less than 0.5% of the continent, are now under growing threat from human activity and climate change.
The Arctic's "Last Ice Area" (LIA)—a vital habitat for ice-dependent species—might disappear within a decade after the central Arctic Ocean becomes ice-free in summer, which is expected to occur sometime around mid-century, a new study by McGill University researchers using a high-resolution model has found.
"Jahn and Heuzé projected/estimated the first ice-free #Arctic day using output from over 300 computer simulations. They found that most models predicted that the first #IceFree day could happen within nine to 20 years after 2023 regardless of how humans alter their greenhouse gas emissions.
The earliest ice-free day in the Arctic Ocean could occur within three years, [by 2027]."
"Vast regions of the #Antarctic coastline were #IceFree for the first time in the observational record.
"To say unprecedented isn't strong enough," Dr Doddridge said.
"For those of you who are interested in statistics, this is a five-sigma event. So it's five standard deviations beyond the mean. Which means that if nothing had changed, we'd expect to see a winter like this about once every 7.5 million years."
