Encountered the weirdest damned Windows 11 bug this week and just happened to stumble upon a blog post in which someone posted the solution, which I will now amplify here:

If all your pinned taskbar icons are broken/blank/generic icons instead of the proper app icons except when the application is running, check your desktop (and possibly inside folders on your desktop) for any executable files. (Shortcuts are fine, just no executable files themselves.)

Delete them or move them somewhere else, and then restart Windows Explorer from the Task Manager. Like magic, mine icons came right back.

No idea how this stupid bug could possibly exist, but there it is. For some reason I had a Firefox executable on my desktop, and it was the culprit for why I had no icons on my taskbar.

I have been trying to boot an old Win10 computer from a #USB with #Linux #Ubuntu iso extraction on it.
I have tried multiple extraction tools (e.g. ImageUSB, Etcher) and different linux distros.
My machine doesn't seem to want to see the USB when I boot (ESC is my safe word 😀 )
I have looked at a lot of sites for assistance, following suggested fixes.

Anybody with a magic wand?

1. Connect my phone to cellular and enable its hotspot (Done)
2. Connect my (Linux 😎) laptop to the hotspot
3. Connect my laptop to the **WAN** port of our router

And that's it. And... it works! Now all the home devices which connect to our usual WiFi APs get Internet!

After reading more about badblocks and S.M.A.R.T., I'm actually a bit confused about how it's possible that a drive that severely damaged (80% of blocks are bad!) is passing its SMART test.

I'm running a long test now to see if it's just the normal test that missed it, but I'm curious if anyone has insight. It's not a high priority or anything (everything is backed up and it's not my main computer). I'm just curious how errors that egregious weren't detected. #Hardware #ITHelp #ComputerSupport #LinuxAdvice

Having a very strange problem with the #NSF #report site. I need to resubmit a requested update from the PO. When I click on either "Submit Report" in "Available Actions" or "re-submit report" in the alert header I get the normal NSF-PAR warning, but when I click "Submit Now", nothing changes. This is consistent across browsers (Firefox, Safari, Chrome, Vivialdi) and has persistent for three days from both home and work networks and with or without VPNs. Help? Please? #IT #IThelp #help
