Yeah, Alien Covenant is about as uneven as I remember. The Prometheus sequel has a lot of things that it’s trying to do; it ostensibly wants to follow up on the themes explored in the 2012 film while also serving as a proper Alien prequel film. It’s far more effective at the latter than the former, but it’s not entirely successful at either. The plot elements that carry over from Prometheus are very solid, other than unceremoniously Hicks-ing one of its characters. I mean, what can you say that hasn’t already been said about Shaun of the Dead? Edgar Wright’s flick hits on just about every level. It’s both a bitingly funny (groan) riff on the zombie film and an effective zombie film in its own right. Simon Pegg, Ed Frost, and Kate Ashfield are all pitch perfect as the stunted hero, the loser best friend and the estranged girlfriend trying to survive a zombie uprising with their friends and loved ones.
