If you found a Hornyphon WM-5104 reel to reel tape deck in the street for free would you take it home? Because apart from being a good-looking 1961 piece of tech, I think we have to agree that Hornyphon is objectively the funniest name for a manufacturer of audio equipment.

Timeline cleanse from the archives:

In 2019, I came across this Hornyphon Diplomat in a Salzburg restaurant. A fine piece of Austrian engineering. Note the names of Austrian & neighboring cities on the faceplate. A little web surfing suggests it was manufactured in 1964. Friedrich Horny started Hornyphon in the 1920s in Vienna. Philips took over Hornyphon in 1934, but continued to market under this label. 9/ Part of the lot was used for housing & shops. Ironically, the site of the historic tavern was approx. at today’s Old Oak, a pub popular with @viennabiocenter staff. The rest of the lot was developed for a radio factory by the innocent name of #Hornyphon, a @Philips subsidiary.
