Alexander Manninger, ex portiere della Serie A di calcio con un passato trae Fiorentina, Bologna, Juventus e Torino, è morto oggi all’età di 48 anni in un incidente stradale.
L’ex calciatore austriaco è deceduto a seguito di un incidente mentre era alla guida della sua auto, un minivan Volkswagen: la vettura, secondo quanto riferiscono i media austriaci, è stata travolta da un treno in corrispondenza di un passaggio a livello senza barriere nei pressi di Salisburgo. Sono rimasti illesi invece il macchinista e i circa 25 passeggeri del convoglio. Le circostanze dell’incidente sono ancora da chiarire, com’è da verificare se il segnale rosso in corrispondenza del passaggio a livello fosse attivo: nonostante i soccorsi siano arrivati prontamente sul posto, per l’ex calciatore non c’è stato nulla da fare.
Manninger, cresciuto calcisticamente nel Salisburgo, si fece notare alla fine degli anni Novanta nell’Arsenal, club londinese di Premier League, dove giocò una quarantina di partite in quattro anni come secondo portiere di David Seaman e vincendo campionato e FA Cup nel 1998.
Da lì il trasferimento in Italia, col passaggio alla Fiorentina nel 2001, poi in Spagna all’Espanyol per poi fare ritorno in Serie A con le esperienze al Torino, Bologna, Siena e soprattutto Juventus: dei bianconeri fu secondo portiere tra il 2008 e il 2012, ultima stagione in cui vinse anche lo Scudetto. Ha chiuso la carriera nel 2018 col Liverpool, mentre in Nazionale ha disputato 33 partite.

Alexander Manninger, former goalkeeper of Serie A football with a past at Fiorentina, Bologna, Juventus and Torino, died today at the age of 48 in a road accident.
The former Austrian footballer died as a result of an accident while driving his car, a Volkswagen minivan: the vehicle, according to Austrian media reports, was hit by a train at a barrier-free level crossing near Salzburg. The train driver and the approximately 25 passengers on the train were unharmed. The circumstances of the accident are still to be clarified, as it needs to be verified whether the red signal at the level crossing was active. Despite the prompt arrival of rescuers at the scene, there was nothing that could be done for the former footballer.
Manninger, who developed his football career in Salzburg, gained attention at the end of the 1990s at Arsenal, a London Premier League club, where he played around forty games in four years as second goalkeeper to David Seaman and won the championship and FA Cup in 1998.
From there, the transfer to Italy, with a move to Fiorentina in 2001, then to Spain to Espanyol before returning to Serie A with experiences at Torino, Bologna, Siena and especially Juventus: he was second goalkeeper for the Bianconeri between 2008 and 2012, his last season in which he also won the Scudetto. He ended his career in 2018 with Liverpool, while in international football he played 33 matches.
