Living in Virginia and being a low-mileage driver, owning an
#EV means I pay a penalty for that EV. Virginia is one of many states that charges a annual fees on
#BEVs,
#PHEVs and
#HEVs. This fee is notionally designed to make up for the tax not being collected on gasoline sales. In Virginia, the fees are fixed, based solely on vehicle type. A fixed-fee means that if you drive fewer miles then than the assessment basis, you're effectively subsidizing others who drive greater miles than the fee's basis.
With an #ICE vehicle, one pays based only on what one actually
uses.
Across our two vehicles, we typically drive less than 9,000mi/yr (which was why, when setting up the lease for our EV, we selected the 7500mi/year lease option ...and are likely to actually underburn it by +1,000mi/yr). I'm going to guess that we're several thousand miles under the fee's basis
