Young Nathan and Rose do as well.

This is a fun one. Especially if I go with the cast of #GwenAndGrey. Grey is the obvious tank (shapeshifting dragon), Gwen and Allen split the thinker job, and Emily... Well she is a ghost, so...

More #GwenAndGrey

"Father, there is one other matter we must be prepared for," Gwen looked concerned, and her father gestured for her to continue "Emil. He will have headed straight for the King's party, and who knows what he will have said."
"Ah, yes. My nephew. I had forgotten about his departure. You're right, that could be tricky. He is likely to have already reached the King. I have an idea, but I would like to hear what you think, as my heir."
"The first thought I had was stupid beyond words."'
"What was that?"
"To have him challenged to a duel, but he'd have the choice of weapons, and I know even amongst the guard, there is no-one to match him with a sword. Then I had another idea, one that is a bit strange, but might work?"
"Well then, let me hear it. And you are correct, a duel would be a fool's response, and probably what he is hoping for."
Gwen nodded "That's what I thought as well. My idea is that we hire some minstrels and bards to spread the word of a royal ball in honour of the King. There are some outlying bannerets and freeholds that should be invited, and they give you an excuse for the minstrels and bards spreading the word."
"And this helps how?"
"Emil will probably be suggesting that you will be against the King. This will undermine that claim."
"It is an inventive solution. And probably more effective than a direct message. Very well, see to it."
"Yes Father."

Gwen and Grey - A fantasy

More Gwen and Grey. Gwen has just sent a messenger spell to call Emily down.

Gwen waited a minute or two, and then sent a second messenger spell after the first, this one glowing a little brighter than the first. A few seconds later there was a loud "thump" of a book hitting the floor. A few seconds after that Emily's head stuck down through the ceiling. "Gwen! Did you have to pull the desk aside?" Then she looked around, and floated down to the floor, drifting up against Allen, taking stock of his expression. "Ah. All right, I see." she continued in a far more subdued tone.

"Father," Allen spoke with an uncommon seriousness, "Emily has brought something to my attention about my returning her to herself. She has reminded me that magic has a cost, and a balance. What I did not know was how that balance would be paid."
"Is it going to kill you, son?"
"No, but Emily's existence has a limit, after which she will not even be a ghost. That is the price and the balance."
Emily broke in "I have made it clear to Allen that he is not to follow me when it is time! Or before."
"I see. How long?"
"My life. So about seventeen more years."
Allen spoke up again "We've talked about it, and she wants me to find someone to anchor me to life for when she has to move on. But Emily, my heart, you are the only one for me."
"And that, dearest is why I want to find someone who can love you enough to ground you until the pain of my passing fades."
The Baron considered his son and ghostly daughter-in-law "Allen, as much as the idea appals you, the men of our family love too hard and too deep. I had you and Gwen to keep me here after your mother passed. You will not have that."
"Not just the men, Father" Gwen added, to which he nodded. Then he continued "The King will be here in a day or two. Perhaps we might find someone in his entourage. If not, Emily, I believe we shall be traditional about this. We shall hold a festival ball. I think it is best that we find someone sooner, so that they can get to know both of you properly."

It has been a while, but here is a new part of #GwenAndGrey

After they had broken their fast, the Baron leaned forward "Now, we have eaten. Gwen, you are the eldest, and despite the tradition being that the eldest son inherits the title, you were always the one we, your mother and I, intended to be heir. I see no reason to change this."
"Oh, thank the gods for that." Allen muttered. The idea of having to run the fiefdom had always filled him with dread.
The Baron continued, with a small smile at his son's relief, "However, I am going to have to insist that you start taking on the responsibilities of the title. And that means living here in the castle."
Gwen looked at Grey. Grey looked back.
"Yes, Grey, that means you are going to have to live here with your wife and children. It is, Gwen, what your mother would have wanted."
Gwen sighed. Father was not playing fair bringing Mother into it. But he was right, if she was the heir, then she had to take on the responsibilities. Including providing heirs of her own. At least that was taken care of.
"Very well, Father. We will move back here, but we will need a new wing - we will need somewhere where Grey can stretch out."
"Well that can be your first responsibility then - organising and paying for the new wing to be built. As for you and Emily, Allen..."
"Yes, Father?"
"I see no reason for things to change. Gwen, you will continue to make Allen and Emily welcome here."
Gwen grinned "Of course - they will always have a home here."
"Thank-you Father - and you, Sister." Allen paused. "Although, Father, Emily and I have some news we need to share."
"Well, I cannot imagine that it is that you are expecting."
"No, but it is serious. Gwen, can you call Emily down?"
"Of course." Gwen whispered to the air, and a small birdlike form darted up and through the ceiling.

@DrPen

We'll see! I still have to finish #GwenAndGrey and the #CerianAndVaranWar !

#WordWeavers 1/12: If you needed companions to start a rebellion, which of your characters would you choose?

Gwen and Grey would be two good options - a mage and a shape-shifting dragon are always a good starting point.

And Tannis and Ashwan are doing a pretty good job, although really it is their squadron-mates that are doing the heavy lifting.

So on the whole, I'll stick with Gwen and Grey.

#GwenAndGrey #CerianAndVaranWar

While working on #ScoutAndShaman, #CerianAndVaranWar, and #GwenAndGrey, I made a conscious decision to limit my physical descriptions of the characters.

Gwen has red hair. Ashwan is "shorter than expected". Hitomi is very tall and has wings (and Claire would give her a run for her money in height). Grey is never actually described beyond the bauplan they are using at the time - and the fact that their preferred #Dragon form is huge. Tannis, Ava, or Estelle don't get described at all.

My reasoning is to allow my readers to create their own images of how the characters look.

Since then, I have (naturally) run off to #HeroForge, and created 3d models of how I imagine they look!

Except for Grey. I will never really be able to model them, because their form is so mutable.

I will not be sharing these models online, because I really do want my readers to be the people who decide what the characters look like.
