[News version] Groff 1.24. 0 was released on 2026-02-28! https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/groff/2026-02/msg00149.html
And #groff is typesetting system, based on text #format with markup tags, used with preprocessors like tbl (for tables), eqn (for maths), refer (for #bibliography), pic (for diagrams).

Your "general idea" is in fact details about the idea :-) : it's exactly what I'm looking for, by using #groff (which make me read what you wrote about groff before) +PIC +recutils +m4...all those venerable powerfull tools, using text #format.
PS: about this way to write &learn music, there is a famous guitarist, Marcel Dadi, who gave concerts &wrote a method using those tablature ("La méthode de guitare à Dadi "), https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcel_Dadi

@aloxe Mais... c'est Groff, mais qui n'est pas la mascotte de Groff !

PS : le 1er est le nom de la chèvre, mascote BSD (le logiciel de type OS).

PS2 : le 2e est le logiciel GNU des logiciels de la famille des roff (roff, nroff, troff, ditroff), logiciels de composition de documents ("typesetter") des années 70, sur les systèmes Unix.

NB du PS2 : et bien sûr, le format de #Groff est un #format à balises texte (comme TeX/LaTeX ou encore HTML).

I can't speak to whether or not #typst is capable of replacing #LaTeX.

That said, it's a pretty neat tool. After poking at the (excellent) documentation and walking through the tutorial, I was able to start building good looking documents without any hand holding.

My use case is "using archaic tools like #groff to avoid fighting with gui/web word processors". If yours is similar, you'll likely enjoy playing with it.
