Looking at the diff, I had no recollection of adding these lines. Fortunately for me, my past self was considerate enough to indicate their purpose. Unfortunately for me, my past self failed to credit the source for their inspiration. Bad dog!
I'd really like to read the article where I cribbed this from today.

Your "general idea" is in fact details about the idea :-) : it's exactly what I'm looking for, by using #groff (which make me read what you wrote about groff before) +PIC +recutils +m4...all those venerable powerfull tools, using text #format.
PS: about this way to write &learn music, there is a famous guitarist, Marcel Dadi, who gave concerts &wrote a method using those tablature ("La méthode de guitare à Dadi "), https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcel_Dadi
