For the #greybeards and others who have been around for a long time, I have a question.

Has it always been the case that you could make heaps of money touching computers by sacrificing your morals?

Because if I didn't have any ethics or morals, I would just lie about securing "AI" agents, after having spent time in the web 3 space securing cryptocurrencies.

The worst social media site (LinkedIN) is flooded with just these types of charlatans. I can't scroll five posts without seeing someone lying about how they can secure that which cannot be secured.

But maybe it's like that meme, and it's always been that way. One of my favorite talks (that I watch at least once a year) is about how the speaker found XSS two years in a row (back in 2012) and I suspect those sites still have XSS today.

Perhaps that's the sick joke of it all? Despite the industry spending hundreds of millions (if not billions) on security, we (they) still have the same problems that have existed for at least two decades.

I honestly have no idea, but I am curious what others think.

No, I will not be shamed by #unix #greybeards into using #vim or #emacs for all of my text editing needs. Yes, they have a lot of good features, but I'm just too used to the #cua keybindings to completely rewrite my muscle memory. #obsidian and #kate do 99% of what I need text editors to do. Although, that #orgmode looks a lot more functional than straight #markdown ... I wish I had stayed in the CS program back in college; we used emacs all the time, I'd have learned all the M-x codes by now.

Another Headline Act as we work our way towards the end of January and further into 2025. This bunch really do rock, and hail from... well, we'll let them tell you!

Simple things first – where are you from?

Also, an early trend in my follows due to my bio, I think: I attract oddball #leftist techies. A lot of fellow #nix #greybeards who #homebrew in that list. Good stuff.

Oh and #grammar nerds.

Another win for Team #GreyBeards. Or #GrayBeards if you prefer.

Am I the only veteran tech guy who now dreams about buying a farm and growing #OpenSource seeds to make a living? Far away from the next fad? Inviting young people to help and learn whatever wisdom we veterans can share? As a community of #GreyBeards with lots of knowledge in a lot of areas? :) (where GreyBeards is just a moniker for people with a lot of knowledge and experience, regardless of gender or identification)
