Edible Green Curtain with chickens

It should be an edible Green Curtain this year.. The squash, beans and sunflowers came up much faster than the morning glories.. But some morning glories are working their way up from under a pile of cut branches (the chicken can scratch all the new seedling away if braches are piled up a bit). I guess I'll need the morning glories as insurance if the squash and beans start to die back while it's still hot well into October.. I like watching the squash vines reach around and keep growing and am not concerned about the harvest. I try to fertilze the flowers when I notice the opportunity but I'm not going to prune back the tendrils so the plan concentrates on the squash.. I'm glad I took the trouble to take some sunflower seeds from the big stalks by the road last year..

Silky Lunch Views...
In the afternoon they tend to congretate under the green curtain. They are safe from falcons and crows with morning glory vines above them. There are a lot of tiny nooks and crannies for the chicks to escape from cats if and feral killer street cats come into the yard. One night I heard a frantic chirping but it was too dark to see much by the time I went out to close up the cages. Sure enough, the next morning there was a chick running around under the green curtain. The little cutie found a way into the box that protects the newly sprouting morning glories and other seedlings. I put a brick in there to hold the box up so the chicks can get in and out better. But the adults should be kept out or they will probably scrape around too much and kill off the cooling vines and any other plant trying to come up..

Green Curtain? Multi-layered Canopy...
It would be interesting if there was some way to measure how much cooler the yard and house are with mounds of green working their way up strings onto the house and over to bushes. Sure, they limit the view out to the chickens but in this climate cooling things down comes first! And the chickens eat the fallen flower petals. When kids come over we can pull off the fading pinkish flowers and feed some birds by hand... Multi-Purpose Morning Glories..

People comment about how big the leaves are on these vines. The vines come from seeds that have just fallen or been cast around for the past couple years. Maybe store-bought seeds are some sort of F1- hybrids ad these plants are working their way back to the original strains? Maybe they are adapting to their situation here? It''s just nice that, once they get going, the grow fast and provide a lot of shade with their big leaves. I hope they stay green shady and cool until October, it will probably be really hot until then..

Maron up on the wall in the sunny morning...

She just looked too cool and chill for me to avoid stopping for photos. I have to remember to get up on the roof and try tying hemp or other fiber strings from the roof peak corner down to the Green Curtain (canopies). Maybe the Mornng Glory vines with their huge (relative to the store-bought seed plants they started as years ago...) leaves can work their way up to cover the roof and cool us down just a bit more... You never know till you try...

Why just do something when you can overdo it?
In this heat I want more than a Green Curtain, I want a mult-layered canopy to survive the heat. All the seeds that fell from last year's green canopy are helping!! Hopefully the morning glory vines will be able to reach the ends of their supporting hemp and jute strings before a typhoon comes. If the vines attach and keep growing where the strings are attached I guess they'll reinforce the starter strings.. Even if a typhoon comes and knocks all this over, the birds seem to enjoy the green tunnel, one was even made a little nest under the morning glories and was laying eggs in there...I saw her sneaking in there but forgot to check of a few day.. Not being sure how old some of the eggs might be when I go to the nest and found 8 or so, I had to be careful to test each one before putting them all together to mix for an omelette. Usually Silky eggs feel so special you only eat one or two at a time, but with these uncertain 8(or so) and some guests it made sense to do decadant Silky Omelette with onion and green pepper. Get some healthy vegetables into the guests!! I shoulda remembered the RiceField Duck pastramin in the refrigerator to add a little taste to the healthiness. A little salt and hammy sort of flavor is better to rely on than an "Eat or Wear It" sort of atmosphere, regardless of how tongue in cheek your trying to be...
