The small business I buy occasional chicken supplies from is the one behind the new coop at the Naval Observatory (where vice presidents live.) Trying to consider that it is an improvement of a Federal property and not a gift to an awkward, boot licking garbage example of a person.

For those who haven't, chicken math is the mysterious phenomenon where you start with a few birds and somehow end up with far more than you ever planned. It defies logic, ignores budgets, and somehow always wins. When I first started raising poultry in 2019, I thought I was getting a small flock. My brother and sister-in-law brought me three Royal Palm turkey poults—Knox, […]

Starting Over, One Stitch, One Seed, and One Bird at a Time

Welcome to Duffney's Bird Barn If you've found your way here, welcome. I'm so glad you're here. My name is Misty, and I'm the creator behind Duffney's Bird Barn. I'm a mom, crocheter, bird lover, gardener, and someone who is still figuring things out one day at a time. Last week I found a GIANT black rat snake in the chicken shed. As a trained naturalist, I managed to fight my "all snakes bad" default reaction.

Black rat snakes in particular are harmless. I told it so as long as it earns its keep (eating rodents) and doesn't fall into the easy "egg-itarian" life, we'd be OK. Working around it was... Interesting. 😑

Today it's gone *whew.* It left me a memento. Thanks, I guess? (photo(s?) in reply)

Dieser #Orpington-Prachtkerl gehört Freunden im Ort und sucht noch ein neues schönes Zuhause, weil er zusammen mit seinem noch größeren Alpha-Bruder die Hennen zu sehr gängelt.

This handsome Orpington #cockerel was raised by friends here in the village. He's looking for a good new home as he harasses the hens along with his even larger alpha brother.
