An American startup... (pumped) hydropower on dry land- no rivers or dams.
(From fb)

In a radical rethinking of water-based energy, an American startup has developed a closed-loop hydropower system that works without a natural river or dam. It uses gravity, elevation, and recycled water to generate continuous electricity — even in dry, landlocked regions. This breakthrough could bring the reliability of hydroelectric energy to places never before considered viable.

"An abandoned mine in #Finland is set to be transformed into a giant #battery to store renewable energy during periods of excess production.

The disused mine will be fitted with a #GravityBattery, which uses excess energy from renewable sources like solar and wind in order to lift a heavy weight. During periods of low production, the weight is released and used to power a turbine as it drops."

Europe’s deepest mine to become gravity battery for storing renewable energy

Estimates suggest abandoned mine shafts could store enough electricity to power the planet

The Independent

"If the world's abandoned mines – primarily concentrated in the US, China, India, and Russia – were repurposed into gravity batteries, as much as 70 terawatt-hours could be captured, the researchers concluded."

Mines wouldn't even need full de-watering; just increase density of weights. :-)

I'm really rooting for these kinds of mineshaft-to-gravity battery storage projects. While nothing is going to be a silver bullet for energy storage, solutions like these which can reutilize old/abandoned infrastructure are a solid way forward. Add onto that the ability to give traditionally coal-dependent communities a way to be part of the solution and you're on to something.

"Gravity batteries are a potentially important solution to a critical problem with the green energy revolution: making sure electricity is available when we need it, not just during the times when sun and wind supply it."
