ksircombeMore #geotourism, this time in the lovely postglacial landscape of #Ontario, #Canada, specifically an island in #SandLake on the #RideauCanal. Always amazing to consider that around 15,000 years ago this spot would have been under at least 1000 metres of ice.
The rocks at this spot are a mixture of #Proterozoic metasediments of the Grenville Supergroup - basically billion year old sedimentary rocks that were well baked and deformed by a major mountain building event that pre-dates the formation of Appalachian Mountains (which formed 'only' 250 million years ago).
And everything is pretty much covered in lichen... makes close-up images less interesting unfortunately :-)
Some more #geotourism! An engineering feat 250 million years in the making... This is the Sea Cliff bridge between Sydney and Wollongong in New South Wales, #Australia. The cliffs are part of the impressive Illawarra Escarpment along the coast and consist of mid-Triassic sediments of the Narrabeen Group. The cliffs are a fairly solid sandstone as you can see, but are underlain by a layer of mudstone and even a bit of coal that is prone to weathering causing the sandstone above to collapse. There was a narrow cliff hugging road through this part of the coast, but there were frequent rockfalls that eventually closed the road permanently in 2003. The ~600 metre long bridge was opened in 2005 to replace the road and is a popular scenic spot.
