"The air, as dusk came, grew yellow, like the fog in Prufrock that licks its tongue into the corners of the evening. At five o’clock, oddly enough, tennis balls I had ordered online were delivered."

Colm Tóibín on his experience of the fire in Los Angeles, and reflecting on its random cultural destuction. The Thomas Mann House intact, Gary Indiana's personal library, just tranferred from New York, lost.

#RIP #GaryIndiana, an important voice in the '80s queer arts community who admirably resisted the mainstream media's attempts to label him a safe "revered veteran" in old age, continuing to publish controversial and transgressive work all the way to his death at 74.

His publisher Dan Simon set it up after I had expressed my love of his writing. Though his acerbic wit on the page made me a little nervous to meet him, in person that night he was gracious and funny.
