Sharing my experiments to curl 100% cotton yarn for doll hair in case someone might find it useful, most resources I found online were about acrylic yarn - which makes sense because that's what you want to use if you want a curl. But if you're anything like me and don't think before you start things...
All of these were wrapped around a wooden toothpick and it's been four days since the test. Worst to best from left to right:
- Orange: iron on medium heat*, 8-10 seconds per side. It lost its curl after approximately 24 hours :(
- Blue: water and sugar, left to dry for 24h. If this sounds like a silly idea, you're right. However the curl isn't too bad, it looks worse because I did four strands together I think.
- Red: iron on high heat*, 20 seconds per side. Pretty nice result, I also gave it a few tugs and it bounced back into a curl.
- White: water and white craft glue, left to dry for 24 hours before unwrapping. I did 80% water and 20% glue. Passed the tugs test too. This definitely has the most consistent curl shape.
*My small craft iron doesn't have temperature markings, just low/medium/high.
Next step is to separate the strands of the red and white and see if they hold the curl still but after four days I *think* I can consider it a success!
